FREMONT (KRON) — Some residents in north Fremont are inviting the public to visit their dazzling lights display this weekend.
The Crippsmas Place event helps raise money for to support charities including Leukemia-Lymphoma Society, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and Adopt an Angel to help children in Alameda County’s Child Protective Services.
A small portion of the money is used for supplies to build new decorations, restore old decorations, and display them.
“Crippsmas Place event is planned and run by dedicated local neighbors, unpaid volunteers who banded together to form the Crippsmas Club,” the organization said on its website. “The motivation of the Crippsmas Club is to support Non-Profit Charities. Volunteers hand out candy canes and accept donations from thousands of visitors.”
The neighborhood’s lights display kicked off in the 1960’s when Robert “Spider” Cantley created “Crippsmas Place” as a Leukemia Lymphoma Society fundraiser in memory of his mother, according to the group.
“For almost 40 years, Cantley and his neighbors have lit up the surrounding streets with larger-than-life figures of cartoon and animated movie characters,” the organization says.
This year, Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus will be on hand for photos and help pass out candy canes from 7-10 p.m. until Christmas Eve.
The event runs from December 12 – 26, Mon-Thurs 6 – 10pm, Fri & Sat 5-11pm, Sun 5-10pm.
