The driver was identified today as 28-year-old Joseph Young of Hollister, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office.

Around 1:45 a.m., Young was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Sonic on southbound Highway 101 north of East Dunne Avenue and crashed into the rear of a 2012 Freightliner truck traveling at about 60 mph in the same lane, CHP officials said.

His passenger, a 28-year-old Hollister woman, suffered major injuries and was transported to Regional Medical Center of San Jose, CHP officials said.
