Man charged with manslaughter of girlfriend in July

SANTA ROSA (BCN) — A Santa Rosa man suspected of killing his girlfriend in her home in July is scheduled to enter a plea to voluntary manslaughter Tuesday in Sonoma County Superior Court.

Humberto Astorga Perez, 31, is suspected of causing internal neck trauma to the 28-year-old victim, Briseida Cornejo Moreno, during a physical altercation at her home in the 1100 block of Lance Drive in Santa Rosa, Sgt. David Linscomb said.

Perez reported the death to police around 10:45 a.m. July 12. Detectives considered the death suspicious because Cornejo Moreno was in good health before she died during the previous night, Linscomb said.

Perez was cooperative during a series of interviews since July but did not admit killing her, according to Linscomb.

Perez was the father of one of Cornejo Moreno’s two children, and the couple had experienced contentious times, Linscomb said.

Perez was arrested Wednesday and was arraigned Friday in Sonoma County Superior Court on charges of voluntary manslaughter, inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or co-inhabitant likely to cause great bodily injury or death, and child cruelty.

He is being held in Sonoma County Jail under $175,000 bail.
