Parents killed in I-580 weather-related crash with children in back seat identified

(KRON) — The couple killed in a single-car crash Sunday morning on Interstate Highway 580 near the Altamont Pass were identified Monday by the Alameda County coroner’s bureau.

Lev Bun, 40, and Phy Phom, 35, both of Oakland, were identified as the victims of the crash that was reported at 10:38 a.m. on eastbound Highway 580 west of West Grant Line Road.

The parents were in the car with their two children, ages 5 and 6, who survived and were transported to a hospital. One of the children suffered traumatic injuries.

The couple was pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle may have hydroplaned on pooling water before it rolled over multiple times and came to rest down an embankment, according to fire officials.

Bun’s sister set up a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses.

The creator of the page, Soriah Lay writes:

I got the worst news today from the Alameda Coroner Office about the passing of my brother and his girlfriend. My heart just felt like dying but I know he want us to be strong and let him rest easy. Nothing is easy when losing your ONLY brother. My family and I is hoping to Raise enough funds towards the funeral cost. I can’t type anymore without sobing. Thank you!”
