Cops: Worker shot in New York mall during attempted robbery

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (AP) — Police in New York say a worker was shot during an attempted robbery inside a Long Island mall filled with Christmas shoppers and a suspect was in custody.

Acting Nassau County Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter says a suspect attempting a robbery at a watch retailer at the Roosevelt Field Mall was wrestling with store security at around 1 p.m. Tuesday. A gun went off and hit a 67-year-old mall employee outside the Tourneau store. He was hospitalized in serious condition.

Jessica Julig of Queens says she was shopping when employees suddenly told her to stay down. She says she heard people screaming, then “started to feel the whole mall shake.”

She says people were running everywhere. Mall workers took her and others to a service entrance to leave the mall.
