ALAMEDA COUNTY (BCN) – Waste Management of Alameda County said today it will change its service days for the holidays and provide free Christmas tree pickups in the communities it serves.
Those communities include Albany, Castro Valley, Emeryville, Hayward, Oakland, the Oro Loma Sanitary District and San Ramon.
Because Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on Fridays, commercial and residential properties with regularly scheduled pickups on Fridays will instead have service provided on the next two Saturdays, Dec. 26 and Jan. 2.
Waste Management also will provide free curbside tree pickups for its residential customers, with schedules varying based on service area.
The garbage collection company says trees must be cut to at most 6 feet long — only 4 feet in Oakland — and be free of snow flocking, tinsel, ornaments, nails and metal or wood tree stands.
Customers may place trees at the curb or in a green yard waste cart, but trees placed in carts must be able to fit inside with the lid closed.
Households may also dispose of one tree free of charge at the Davis Street Transfer Station at 2815 Davis St. in San Leandro.
Additional trees will be accepted at a cost of $5 a tree.
Customers who dispose of trees with snow flocking, tinsel, ornaments, nails and metal or wood tree stands will be charged a fee of at least $50.
For single-family homes, pickups are as follows: Jan. 6 to Jan. 31 in Albany, Jan. 6 to Jan. 17 in Castro Valley and Emeryville, Jan. 4 to Jan. 15 in Hayward, Dec. 28 to Jan. 15 in Oakland, Jan. 2 to Jan. 14 in Oro Loma and the week of Jan. 6 in San Ramon.
Collection dates for multi-families generally are the same but the procedures are more complex.
In Albany, properties with between 3 to 99 units can put trees in a central waste collection area for pickup on Jan. 7. Owners of larger properties can call Waste Management at (925) 837-3356 for a free roll-off box.
In Castro Valley, owners of properties with 5 units or more can place trees in a central waste collection area or in a yard waste container.
In Emeryville, owners of properties with 4 units or more can either place trees curbside, in a waste collection area or call Waste Management at (510) 613-8710 to ask for a roll-off box free of charge.
In Hayward, properties with between 5 and 24 units may place trees curbside. Larger properties may call Waste Management at (925) 837-3356 to order a free roll-off box.
In Oakland, properties between 5 and 100 units may place trees curbside on compost service day. Owners of properties of more than 100 units are asked to call Waste Management at (510) 613-8710 to determine the collection method.
In Oro Loma, owners of properties with more than 5 units that have bin service may call Waste Management at (510) 673-8710 to ask for a roll-off box free of cost.
In San Ramon, trees will be collected from multi-family properties during the week of Jan. 13.
