SONOMA COUNTY (KRON) — A kayaker died Wednesday afternoon and another made it to shore after their kayaks or kayak tipped over near Goat Rock in Sonoma County, the sheriff’s office said.
Sheriff’s deputies received a report at around 1:40 p.m. that two kayakers tipped over in the rough waters just off Goat Rock Beach near the mouth of the Russian River. That is located in the Jenner area.
One male kayaker made it to shore shortly after the report. He told emergency crews he saw his friend leave his kayak and start to swim to the shore, but he lost sight of him, deputies said.
The man was transported to a hospital in Santa Rosa for treatment. Crews kept searching for the missing man and found him at around 2:55 p.m. A CHP spotted him about a half-mile into the water.
Crews rushed the man to the U.S. Coast Guard Station at Bodega Bay, where he was pronounced dead.
The man who died has been identified as 63-year-old Joseph Patrick Woods, of San Rafael. His family has been notified of his death.
An autopsy will be conducted sometime in the future.
The investigation is ongoing.
