PACIFICA (KRON) — Two people were killed in a fiery Christmas Day crash on northbound state Highway 1 in Pacifica. One of the deceased was an Uber passenger.
The crash happened early Friday morning at 2:39 a.m., on the highway at Paloma Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
San Francisco CHP confirmed one of the vehicles involved in the accident was an Uber driver and passenger.
An Uber driver was reportedly driving northbound on Highway 1 in a Nissan Maxima. A wrong-way driver was driving southbound on Highway 1 in a Toyota Corolla, the CHP said.
The Corolla struck the Nissan head-on.
The collision killed 25-year-old Jason Gilbride, of Pacifica, a passenger in the Uber car.
The driver of the Corolla died as well. That person has not been identified.
The Uber driver survived the crash but is fighting for his life at San Francisco General Hospital, officers said.
Uber spokesperson Nairi Hourdajian issued a statement saying the ride share company was “deeply saddened by this terrible tragedy.”
“This Christmas Day, our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those killed and with the injured driver and his loved ones,” said Hourdajian.
The CHP had issued a Sig-alert due to the crash and reported a fire temporarily blocked the highway at Paloma Avenue.
The roadway has since been cleared.
