City: ‘Inappropriate’ Austin map used in presentation

AUSTIN (KXAN) – An Austin city staffer has been placed on administrative leave for his use of a ‘completely inappropriate’ map in a city presentation.

A memo from City Manager Marc Ott says the incident took place during Tuesday night’s Zoning and Planning Commission meeting.

An unnamed employee for the Austin Transportation Department is accused of downloading a satirical map of Austin from the internet for a presentation on street connectivity and strategic mobility initiatives. The slide was meant to emphasize the fact that a “street traverses many places…” however, the map has derogatory labels for areas of the city.

“Using this backdrop was completely inappropriate,” said Ott.

“I am personally offended by this map,” Transportation Department Director Robert Spillar said in an apology letter.

The incident is under investigation. The staffer could face further punishment depending on the findings.
