SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A Bay Area woman who is pregnant said she is very upset by the fact she has been tested for a dangerous virus that can cause birth defects.
It is called the Zika virus. The woman, named Brook Meakins, is about 21 weeks into her pregnancy. She and her husband traveled to French Polynesia over the holidays, one of the places where the virus is active.
On Facebook, they have posted messages, saying they are emotional and upset about the possibility that she has been exhibiting some of the symptoms of the mosquito-borne virus.
They said they are praying that tests show she has not been infected.
In the meantime, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention is issuing a warning to pregnant women who have traveled to parts of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Meakins spent most of Monday in an emergency room, getting a battery of tests for a rash and achy joints.
She and her husband said they now want to raise awareness of the virus. Health workers are warning pregnant women in the meantime to postpone travel to the areas, where the virus is active.
