Richmond gas leak near Civic Center capped, evacuation orders lifted

UPDATE 7:32 P.M.: The scene has been deemed safe and the evacuation order has been lifted.


RICHMOND (KRON) — The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents in Richmond to avoid the area of the Civic Center due to a gas leak.

Residents are being asked to avoid the area of 25th Street between MacDonald Avenue and Bissell Avenue. Evacuations are in place in the area, the sheriff’s office said.

According to PG&E, a carport at 242 25th Street collapsed and the gas meter was damaged, causing the leak.

Crews were trying to access the meter but are having difficulty due to the collapse.

Gas was still free flowing, but PG&E crews and emergency personnel are on scene, according to PG&E.

Crews were able to cap the leak just after 7 p.m. Thursday.

No other information was made available by police.
