RICHMOND (BCN) – A memorial service will be held Friday in Richmond for a police officer shot to death on Thursday at his home in Vallejo, police said.
The service for Richmond police officer Augustine “Gus” Vegas will start at 10 a.m. at the Richmond Memorial Auditorium at 403 Civic Center Plaza. The service is open to the public, according to police.
The 58-year-old Vegas was shot shortly before 4:40 a.m. in his home at 35 Narragansett Court in the Glen Cove neighborhood.
Police allege that 30-year-old Robert Vega, the father of Vegas’s grandson, was the person who killed Vegas.
A memorial fund has been set up to help the family of Vegas, who was a 15-year veteran of the police department. Vegas was also involved in helping foster children through a nonprofit and was parenting a foster child.
People who want to donate to the fund can do so through Mechanics Bank with account No. 041305213 and routing No. 121102036.
A burial service and reception after the memorial service is open only to family, friends and law enforcement officers, according to police.
