Mother rescues sleeping baby, 9 others from Fremont house fire

FREMONT (BCN) — A mother rescued a sleeping baby, six other sleeping children and three sleeping adults Wednesday afternoon from a fire burning at a home in Fremont, fire officials said.

Firefighters responded at 1:11 p.m. to a report of a fire at 42516 Roberts Ave. where callers said they could see smoke and flames coming from the home.

The home did not have any smoke detectors but the heat of the fire woke the woman, fire Division Chief Diane Hendry said.

“The mother woke up and got everyone out of the house,” Hendry said.

The fire started outside of the home and fire investigators have yet to determine whether an arsonist set the fire, Hendry said.

When firefighters arrived they found heavy fire burning a one-story, single-family home with flames spreading to the roof and inside of the home.

Firefighters attacked from the inside and outside of the home and kept it from spreading beyond two bedrooms and a hallway, fire officials said. But the rest of the home sustained heavy smoke and water damage.

Fire officials said the home sustained about $400,000 in damage to its exterior and the value of the contents lost was about $60,000.

The fire displaced 11 people and 15 dogs and chickens living there. The American Red Cross is helping those victims.

No one was injured, according to fire officials.
