(BCN) – Two people went to a hospital in critical condition this afternoon after a two-vehicle collision in the unincorporated Santa Cruz County community of Davenport, officials with the California Highway Patrol said.
The first report of the collision came in at 2:30 p.m. on northbound state Highway 1 at Cement Plant Road, CHP officials said.
In all, five people were taken to hospitals.
One person was taken to Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz and four were taken to trauma centers in San Jose, according to Cal Fire officials.
The driver of a Ford Excursion with the five inside veered to the right to avoid hitting a vehicle in front of them and crashed into a steep embankment, CHP Officer C. Stewart said.
Alcohol does not appear to have played a part in the crash, Stewart said.
