RICHMOND (KRON) — Until Friday morning, the historic Liberty Ship called Red Oak Victory was at a dock in Richmond when it was moved to a slip just yards away.
The move was made in conjunction with the opening of the Riggers Loft Winery to open up the views of San Francisco and Angel Island from the winery, and its soon-to-be-built patio.
The new spot places the ship in a historical setting which reflects the World War II shipyards, where hundreds of liberty ships were constructed.
“It was moved to clear this beautiful view of San Francisco Bay and the city of San Francisco across the Bay,” Richmond Mayor Tom Butt said. “And the location it’s in, this is one of the five historic basins that were used for dry docks where ships like this were built so in a way it’s come home.”
The city of Richmond hopes to develop other historic buildings next to the the Red Oak Victory’s new mooring.
