SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A proposal was made by a board member on Monday who wants to make it illegal for a person to take up more than one seat on BART, according to board officials Tuesday.
The new ordinance would make it illegal for a person to take up more than one seat when someone else wants to sit down.
BART police cannot do anything if a rider is taking up more than one seat. While they certainly would prioritize calls by making it a law, BART police could take action by getting involved and handing out fines.
There are exceptions–when a person’s size or medical condition makes them take up more than one seat.
The first reading of this new ordinance is this Thursday at the BART board meeting. It needs to pass twice in order to be a law.
So if this does become a new law on BART, the first fine would be $100, second fine $200, third time $500.
