Tech Trends: History of Bay Area revived through remastering old news film footage


SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Something very special is taking place inside the Special Collections department of the J. Paul Leonard Library at San Francisco State University.

With the help of new technology, film archivists are bringing to life the history of the Bay Area.

They showed Tech Trends reporter Gabe Slate what they are up to and what unique experience they are offering for free to anyone who wants it.

Established in 1982, the TV Archive preserves 6000 hours of news film, documentaries and other programs produced in the Bay Area and Northern California from the Twentieth Century.

Part of the J. Paul Leonard Library’s Department of Special Collections at San Francisco State University and manage collections owned by local TV stations like KRON-TV

This team at SFSU is digitally restoring and archiving old footage from Bay Area TV stations including KRON.
