OAKLAND (KRON) — Oakland A’s starting ace Sonny Gray has been scratched from Monday night’s lineup due to food poisoning. Rich Hill will take the mound for his first Opening Day start.
This would have been Gray’s third consecutive opening day start.
Last season, the right-hander helped snap the Athletics 10-game opening day losing streak with a 8-0 win over the Texas Rangers. In that game, Gray threw 7 hitless innings before the Rangers’ Ryan Rua broke up the no-hitter with a lead off single in the 8th.
Hill, 36, becomes the A’s 10th different opening day starting pitcher in the last 11 years. He’s also the fourth-oldest pitcher to start an opener in Oakland history, the team said.
The A’s kickoff the season tonight at 7:05 p.m. at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
