Beach hazards statement remains in effect through tonight

A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through Sunday night for coastal areas in northern and central California, the National Weather Service said.

From midnight Saturday through tonight at 9 p.m., large sneaker waves are expected at beaches from Sonoma County to Monterey County, with swell periods of 18 to 19 seconds, according to weather service officials.

While swell heights are only expected to be between 5 and 7 feet, the long periods may increase the risk for sneaker waves.

Beachgoers should be cautious, as large sneaker waves are capable of washing unsuspecting people into the water from the beach and rocks, weather service officials said.

Additionally, people walking along the beach should never turn their back to the sea and fishermen should avoid fishing from rocks of jetties, according to weather service officials.
