Memorial service held for 110th anniversary of 1906 earthquake

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — April 18 marks 110 years since the great earthquake of 1906.

The 7.8-magnitude earthquake shook the Bay Area for almost a minute. 3,000 people were killed and huge parts of San Francisco were destroyed. A fire also broke out after the quake adding to the destruction.

A special ceremony is being held early Monday morning at Lotta’s Fountain in San Francisco’s Financial District.

Family and friends of the last known earthquake survivors will join the community to remember the victims of the earthquake.

There will also be a memorial ceremony to show solidarity for the victims of the recent earthquakes in Japan and Ecuador.
