SAN MATEO (BCN) — A Saratoga high school student who died in a crash on state Highway 35 in unincorporated San Mateo County this weekend was identified today by the county coroner’s office as 17-year-old Niyal Sanghi.
Sanghi, a junior at Prospect High School, died in a single-vehicle crash reported at 11:57 a.m. Saturday on state Highway 35, also known as Skyline Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A four-door Audi sedan went down an embankment on the highway’s southbound side south of Alpine Road, according to the CHP.
CHP officials said it appears the male teenage driver was speeding when he lost control of the car on the rain-soaked roadway, veered off the road and hit a tree.
Sanghi was then trapped inside the vehicle and was pronounced dead after he was extricated, according to the CHP.
Campbell Union High School District officials today announced that grief counselors were being provided at Prospect High School.
“The district is prepared to do everything we can to support Niyal’s family and (the school’s) community through this period of grief,” Tanya Krause, the district’s interim superintendent, said in a statement.
Krause added, “This is an especially tragic turn of events because (Saturday) was also (Sanghi’s) birthday.”
The high school’s principal, Joell Hanson, said in a statement that the teen “was a good student with a lot of friends.”
The announcement said that Sanghi was wearing a seat belt when CHP officers arrived at the scene.
CHP officials have said that drugs and alcohol do not appear to have played a part in the boy’s death.
