Friday the 13th events at Winchester Mystery House

SAN JOSE (KRON) — Tours and festivities at San Jose’s Winchester Mystery House will take place this afternoon with the ringing of tower bells, officials with the house said.

The tower bells will ring on Friday the 13th at 1:00 p.m. or 1300 hours at the Victorian mansion at 525 S. Winchester Boulevard in honor of the home’s owner, Sarah Winchester, who had a penchant for the number 13.

No one seems to know why Sarah Winchester had the penchant for the number 13. “She just thought it was a lucky number,” the home’s spokesperson Time O’Day said.

The San Hose Sharks mascot, S.J. Sharkie, will ring the tower bells and rare evening flashlight tours will start at 6:30 p.m. and go until 12:30 a.m. Saturday, said O’Day.

Symbols of Winchester’s fondness for the number 13 can be seen throughout the house, which has 13 steps in the staircase and 13 bathrooms.

This year is the 40th anniversary of the ringing of the tower bells and the Friday the 13th festivities.

O’Day said the bells ring only on Friday the 13th.

The Winchester Mystery House is one of America’s most haunted homes.

“There are lots of stories,” O’Day said. He recently took a photo of the home in which an image of a person’s face and an arm appears in one of the windows.

But no one ever feels the alleged presence or ghosts are menacing, O’Day said.
