SONOMA, Calif. (KRON) – Marine scientists are looking into the death of whale after it washed up at a Sonoma County beach on Monday afternoon.
Crews aboard a Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office helicopter spotted the dead whale at Salmon Creek Beach, just north of Bodega Bay, authorities said.
The type of whale has not been determined as of Tuesday morning.
The dead whale is the latest of several that have turned up in the Bay Area, including a 25-foot whale carcass that washed up north of the Dumbarton Bridge along Fremont’s shoreline in September.
“It’s highly unusual to find a whale that far south,” East Bay Regional Park District spokeswoman Carolyn Jones said about the unusual discovery.
