ANTIOCH (KRON) — A body recovered from an Antioch canal has been identified as 34-year-old Wesley Caldwell Jr. out of Antioch.
On Thursday morning, authorities received a call at about 8:46 a.m. reporting the male’s body, according to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.
The Antioch Police Department and Contra Costa County Fire responded to the scene. Emergency crews took around an hour to retrieve the body from the canal near Antioch Community Park by James Donlon Boulevard and Nightingale Drive.
The Contra Costa County coroner’s office identified the body on Thursday morning.
The coroner officer said they do not believe foul play was a result of death, however, details are pending until autopsy results are released.
It is thought that this man was involved in a hit and run that had occurred earlier on. He and a female were involved in a hit and run but fled the scene. The female was eventually caught but this man was not.
Based on the investigation thus far, it is believed this is the man they were looking for, according to the coroner’s office.
Antioch police are investigating the case.
