PALO ALTO (KRON) — Palo Alto police have arrested an armed man accused of stealing a bag of recyclables, police said.
It happened on Thursday at around 9:43 a.m on Park Boulevard near Cambridge Avenue, police said. The suspect allegedly brandished a pair of the scissors during the robbery.
Police said the victim, in his 60s, was sitting on the east side of Peers Park, located at 1899 Park Boulevard. He had a cart full of his belongings nearby, police said.
“He heard a noise, and looked up to see the suspect walking away with one of his large bags full of recyclables that had been on his cart. The victim, who did not know the suspect, told him to stop,” police said in a press release.
“The suspect pulled what appeared to be a knife out of his pocket, but kept walking southbound on Park Boulevard,” police said.
The victim followed the suspect, who police identified as 24-year-old Kenneth Ray Williams, about 10 feet until they ended up near the intersection of Cambridge Avenue. That is when Williams turned and pointed the scissors at the victim and told him to stop following him, police said.
When officers arrived at the scene, they said they detained the suspect and recovered the broken pair of scissors, which had a 3-inch blade.
Williams was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for one count of felony robbery.
Police returned the stolen bag of recyclables to the victim, police said.
