SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The Latest on California legislative committees advancing gun-control legislation (all times local):

1:20 p.m.

Democratic California lawmakers have approved a dozen gun control bills, saying the nation’s deadliest mass shooting in history gives the legislation added urgency.

Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon of Los Angeles says the 49 people killed at an Orlando nightclub were easily mowed down with high-powered weapons, making it important to pass more aggressive restrictions.

California already has some of the nation’s strictest gun laws. De Leon’s package of legislation and a competing November ballot measure by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom were already in the works before the mass shooting in Orlando.

Among the 12 measures approved in committees Tuesday are those requiring people to turn in high-capacity magazines and regulating ammunition sales.

Gun-rights advocates say the Legislature’s crackdown would not prevent determined criminals from gaining access to weapons.

Democratic California lawmakers are advancing a sweeping array of gun control legislation days after the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

The Senate and Assembly public safety committees are considering a dozen bills on Tuesday. All were in the works prior to the weekend shooting.

Among the bills being debated are measures that would require people to turn in high-capacity magazines and regulate ammunition sales.

California has some of the nation’s strictest gun laws, and high-ranking Democrats have clashed over how to make them even stronger. Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom is promoting a November ballot measure, while Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon prefers legislative action.

Gun-rights advocates say the Legislature’s crackdown would deprive gun owners of their constitutional rights without preventing determined criminals from getting access to weapons.
