MONTEREY COUNTY (BCN)—A man wanted on a warrant out of Missouri was allegedly seen driving a stolen car on U.S. Highway 101 in Monterey County on Wednesday evening, California Highway Patrol officials said today.
Jason Thomas Piel, 38, is suspected of domestic violence, robbery and failure to register as a sex offender, CHP officials said.
Piel is a St. Louis, Missouri resident who is considered armed and dangerous, according to the CHP.
Around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, a bail bonds agent in Missouri called CHP dispatch to report that Piel and a woman were in a stolen maroon Ford Taurus on northbound Highway 101 north of King City, CHP official said.
The bail bonds agent suspected Piel had a handgun and knife with him, according to the CHP.
An officer saw a car with Missouri license plates that matched the one described by the agent on Highway 101 near Boronda Road in Salinas, CHP officials said.
The suspect driver, later identified as Piel, exited at Sala Road and went south to Russell Road, where the officer noticed a female passenger was inside, according to the CHP.
When Piel turned into Heritage Garden Apartments, the officer parked on Main Street and waited for back up, CHP officials said.
The officer saw Piel park the vehicle in a stall at the complex and walk away, according to the CHP.
The woman left inside the car transferred to the driver’s seat and drove away from the complex, but was quickly stopped by other officers who responded to the scene, CHP officials said.
The woman, 36-year-old Yolanda Goodwin, told officers that she had been sleeping in the passenger seat while Piel drove from Missouri and didn’t wake up until Piel parked the car at the complex, according to the CHP.
She added that Piel told her she’d be OK before he walked away from the car, CHP officials said.
Once Piel left, Goodwin was scared and drove away, CHP officials said.
The woman said she was allowed to drive the vehicle, which belonged to her mother, and didn’t believe it was stolen, according to the CHP.
The 36-year-old woman was aware that Piel had a warrant out for his arrest, according to the CHP.
Goodwin, a Clinton, Missouri resident, was arrested on suspicion of stealing a vehicle and possession of stolen property, CHP officials said.
More officers responded to the scene to look for Piel but were unsuccessful in their search, according to the CHP.
Piel is described as a white man standing about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 225 pounds and bald. He has a tattoo of a crown on his left eyebrow and another with the word “Raza” on the front of his neck, CHP officials said.
In 2012, Piel was arrested in Ojai for allegedly being under the influence of a controlled substance and violating parole for a sexual crime against a minor, Ventura County sheriff’s officials said.
He was also suspected of financial crimes in Camarillo, another city in Ventura County, and Santa Barbara, sheriff’s officials said.
