LOS ANGELES (KRON)— Attorney General Kamala Harris sent a letter Monday to the Food and Drug Administration urging them to allow gay men to donate blood.
Harris said technology and an better understanding of HIV now allows the FDA to abandon the discriminatory practice.
The deadly nightclub shooting in Orlando turned away dozens of blood donors because of the FDA policy. It was a time where blood donations were greatly needed, Harris said.
“Understanding the FDA’s responsibility for maintaining the safety of the nation’s blood supply and your steadfast commitment to implementing data-driven policies, I call on you to consider less categorical risk-based donation policies that will ensure blood safety,” Harris wrote to the FDA.
This is not the first time that Harris has tried to help the LGBTQ community. In the past, Harris has defended the right for same-sex couples to marry.
