SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Officials warn that areas of two California lakes that have turned bright green could make you and your dog sick.
State water officials say they’ve have found algae blooming in the Pit River arm of Lake Shasta in Northern California and areas of Pyramid Lake in Los Angeles County.
Officials advise steering clear of the tainted water that also appears blue-green and looks like spilled paint. It causes white or brown foamy scum to float on the water and gather along the shore.
Swimmers risk swallowing it, while water skiers and jet skiers could send a spray it into the air and possibly inhale it.
Officials say the health risks are especially great to children and pets. It can irritate eyes, cause a skin rash, vomiting, diarrhea and flu-like symptoms.
