San Francisco leaders oppose putting supervisor’s $20 million plan on hold for police

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON)—The San Francisco Chamber of Commerce and the San Francisco Travel Association announced Monday they are against Supervisor John Avalos’ proposal to put $20 million on hold for the police department budget for this year.

The organizations say if the measure is approved, it would put the public’s safety at risk.

The police department might have to make-up for those funds by cancelling academy classes, furloughing police recruits, and reducing overtime.

The lack of funding may also change how the police department is run. The department might also cut the number of officers on foot patrol and reduce staffing for large, public events.

The chamber of commerce and the travel association say the department could possibly not have enough officers it is required to have.
