WEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) – Multiple transformers caught on fire at the Florida Power and Light facility in West Miami-Dade, Tuesday afternoon.
7Skyforce HD captured heavy flames and a huge column of thick, black smoke along Northwest 72nd Avenue, between 61st and 62nd streets.
Miami-Dade Police and Doral Police responded to the scene of the blaze shortly after officers heard a loud explosion, at around 4 p.m., and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue is now setting up for an attack on the flames.
FPL officials said power is out in the area surrounding the facility as a result of the fire. About 3,500 people are currently without electricity.
Officials said traffic is being diverted at Runway 12 at nearby Miami International Airport.
Officers shut down Northwest 72nd Avenue in both directions, but the Palmetto Expressway remains open.
