OAKLAND (KRON)–Caltrans has activated over 100 signs Thursday that are across Interstate 80 in the Bay Area.
The signs will span across the freeway from the Bay Bridge to the Carquinez Bridge and will feature Lane Use Signs and Variable Advisory Speed Signs.
They will stay dark unless something blocks a lane within the I-80 corridor. When this happens, the signs will guide drivers to the lanes that are clear.
An average of 25 collisions is reported in the corridor every week.
Caltrans has been testing the system for several weeks before deciding to activate the signs.
