LEXINGTON, Miss. (WJTV) – People from all over are celebrating the work and legacy left behind by sisters Paula Merrill and Margaret Held.
Both nuns were found stabbed to death inside their Durant home.
The suspect, Rodney Sanders, was arrested Friday, August 26, 2016.
Saint Thomas Catholic Church in Lexington is holding a wake service for the nuns Sunday evening.
WJTV spoke with Father Reverend Gregory Plata about the women’s impact on the community and the arrest.
“We know that these women are among the communion of saints and we know that by their exemplary lives the show us how to live as Christians and as disciples of Jesus,” said
“We’re also praying for this person too, part of the heart of Christianity is that we forgive those that persecute us and do violence to us.”

There is new information about the suspect in their murders; Rodney Earl Sanders has a criminal record.
According to the Mississippi Department of Corrections, Sanders was convicted of a felony DUI in Attala County and sentenced in 2015.
He was later released from prison and was on probation.
We’re also told Sanders was convicted of armed robbery and served six years in prison. He was convicted for that crime back in 1986.
