FREMONT (KRON) — Suspects fleeing in stolen cars from a Fremont dealership Monday morning were involved in a crash on I-880 in Hayward.
Around 11:30 p.m. Sunday night police received a phone call from an employee at an auto dealership in the 4300 block of Peralta Boulevard for a report of a burglary and vehicle theft, according to police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques.
According to the employee, two suspects had gained entry into the dealership’s office and took all the keys to the vehicles, along with one car from the dealership’s lot, Bosques said.
When officers responded, they were unable to locate the suspect and left the scene.
However, around 2 a.m. this morning, police again received a call from an employee at the dealership, saying the suspects had returned and took another car from the dealership, according to Bosques.
After stealing multiple cars, the suspects fled the car dealership and ended up in a three-car crash on northbound I-880 near Decoto Road at 2:06 a.m.
After the crash, the suspects continued to flee. They hopped into another car and continued up northbound I-880.
The suspects were then involved in a second crash that only involved their own vehicle.
An employee told police before the crash, they were following the two suspects, who were each in separate cars taken from the dealership, onto northbound Highway 880 from Thornton Avenue, Bosques said.
Firefighters had to extricate a victim from an overturned car in the first crash. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
One suspect is now in custody. Further information on outstanding suspects was not made available by police.
Authorities believe a security guard or car dealership employee was chasing the suspects after the fled the dealership.
Police were unable to reach the employee who initially called to report the burglary and who then allegedly followed the suspects onto the freeway, according to Bosques.
