Capitol Corridor train hits car in Union City

UNION CITY (KRON) — A Capitol Corridor train has hit a car in Union City on Tuesday night, according to a tweet.

At around 6:35 p.m., a woman in a Prius was approaching the railroad crossing on Whipple Rd (near Railroad Ave) when someone struck her vehicle from behind, Union City police Lt. Jeff Snell said.

Although the collision was a “minor” fender bender, it did push the Prius onto the railroad tracks.

The driver saw a train was approaching and decided to abandon the vehicle.

The train did collide with the vehicle, destroying it, Snell said.

None of the 200 passengers on the train was injured.

The driver also did not suffer any injuries.

Roads were closed in the area after the train struck, but everything has since been re-opened.

Passengers were delayed roughly 90 minutes as a result of the crash.

Further details were not immediately available.
