HAYWARD (KRON)—The city of Hayward has been awarded a $2.7 million grant to supply its businesses with high-speed Internet using fiber optic cables, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The grant is expected to create 148 jobs and retain 26 in the area, the department said.

The city of Sanger in Fresno County will also be awarded a $1.2 million grant for its water storage tank project.

Both projects will be funded through the department’s Economic Development Administration.

“The EDA grants announced today will support infrastructure projects that will boost business development and job growth in the Northern California region,” Department of Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker said in a statement.
