(KRON)—President Obama is establishing the first national marine monument in the Atlantic.
It’s a big move and the first of its kind.
The move is designed to permanently protect nearly 5,000 square miles of underwater canyons and mountains.
The president made the announcement at an ocean conference in Washington D.C. Thursday.
The area in question is about 130 miles off Cape Cod.
He was joined by celebrities including actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
The president says that saving the oceans means taking ‘bold action.’
DiCaprio said that the world has to stop treating the oceans as an endless resource to be exploited and a dumping ground for waste.
The White House says the new designation will lead to a ban on commercial fishing, mining and drilling.
But recreational fishing will be allowed.
