OAKLAND (KRON) — The man killed in a shooting in Oakland on Wednesday has been identified as a City Hall security guard, according to police spokeswoman Karen Boyd.
The shooting happened in the city’s Fruitvale District at around 4:28 a.m. Sixty-six-year-old Tony Smith worked in the area surrounding City Hall and was contracted through the Cypress Private Security company.
He was found shot and killed in a car near the corner of 35th Avenue and International Boulevard, police said.
Police have not disclosed a suspected motive for the shooting and have made no arrests.
“Tony was a great asset to our security team and City Family, he was instrumental in ensuring the safety of our staff and visitors to the Civic Center Complex and the Frank H. Ogawa Plaza,” city officials wrote in an email announcement distributed Thursday morning.
