PALO ALTO (KRON)—Someone stole thousands of dollars from a church right after the weekly service was over.

Now, authorities are looking for the thief and the church increasing security.

As KRON4’s Terisa Estacio reports, the thief took the money right in front of the entire congregation.

“People saw that he just grabbed it and went out that door,” said youth pastor Sam Aom.

He says a thief stole as much as $10,000 from the Cornerstone Community Church in Palo Alto

“Normally people would just greet each other and say hi and catch up and then he just kind of walked up, grabbed it, walked out the door and then ran out,” Aom said.

Pastor Aom says it happened Sunday.

Someone sitting in the back came up right after the 11:30 a.m. service.

“It’s not the funds that really matters more just our sense of unity and security that we’re trying to work on here,” Aom said.

The pastor says the man was Asian with black hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a grey hoodie, and was approximately 35 to 40 years old.

The church plans on taking praying as well as taking action.

“Set up cameras here,” Aom said. “We have some cameras, but I think we just need to update them.”

Plus, he says they will be looking at ways to gather the offering in a safer manner.

“Kind of a better system for the offering here,” Aom said.

The thief took off through the childrens playground which is another concern of the church.

“We’re going to set up some people cuz the kids play out afterwards,” Aom said. “So we have a set of eyes watching them.”

Pastor Sam says the offering was for the general church fund . He says they are hoping that the person does the right thing and returns it.
