OAKLAND (KRON) — The City of Oakland is hoping to stop prostitution by going after the johns.

A new website has launched where you can report people to police who are soliciting sex.

Prostitutes waiting for a john to pony up, unfortunately, is a common sight on the streets of Oakland, according to mayor Libby Schaaf.

“These young girls are victims, not criminals,” Schaaf said.

And now, the public can anonymously join the fight against sexual exploitation by exposing pimps and solicitors on the new website reportjohn.org.

“This information goes to the city of Oakland’s police department, but we are working with the CEASE Network to bring this website to other cities that are interested,” Schaaf said.

The website is simple, and it takes less than 2 minutes to fill out a report.

The site allows people to report vehicles and potential johns attempting to engage in sex crimes.

You can take a photo or short video of the car in question, report the license plate number, make and model of the car, and where the incident happened.

Mayor Schaaf says police will then review the tips, then send letters out to the registered owners of the cars, letting them know their vehicle was seen in an area with high incidents of prostitution.

“We know that exposure and shame could be even more powerful than an actual criminal conviction in deterring people from exploiting our women and particularly our young girls,” Schaaf said.

Repotjohn.org is now up and running.

“We are using this in a way that is absolutely defensible. If you do not have anything to hide, it should not be a problem,” Schaaf said.

And mayor Schaaf said the tips are already coming in.
