Automated License Plate Reader leads to man’s arrest

NOVATO (KRON)—Police arrested a suspected car thief Saturday morning in Novato with the help of an Automated License Plate Reader.

Officers were using the license plate reader on Ignacio Blvd. around 7:30 a.m. when it told them of a stolen car driving by.

Police were able to confirm that the 2010 Chevrolet Avalanche was stolen and were able to have the driver pull over.

The driver has been identified as Cody Smith, 21, of Richmond.

Smith was arrested for possessing burglary tools, suspicion of car theft and driving with a suspended license. He has been booked into the Marin County Jail.

The Chevy Avalanche was processed as evidence and given back to its owner.

Automated License Plate Readers are designed to recognize license plates that have been entered into the stolen car database.

Several Novato police officers have these types of license plate readers.
