HAYWARD (KRON) — Hayward Police officers are investigating a shooting that left one person dead on Friday night.
Hayward Police officers responded to a report of shots fired and a man down in the 700 block of Memorial Avenue at approximately 9:41 p.m.
Officers arrived to locate an unresponsive male adult suffering from a gunshot wound on the ground in front of an apartment complex.
The first officers on scene began to provide first aid to the victim until the Hayward Fire Department arrived a short time after. Attempts to revive the victim were unsuccessful. The victim was declared deceased by Hayward Fire Department personnel.
The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau has identified the victim as Matios Haile Zeru, 29-year-old African American male from Hayward.
Detectives are actively following up on investigative leads.
Zeru’s official cause of death will be determined once an autopsy is completed by the Coroner’s Bureau early next week.
