SAN MATEO (KRON)—San Mateo residents helped catch a suspected burglar in their neighborhood Monday morning after one of their neighbors caught a man inside her home, according to police.
The incident was reported to police at a home on the corner of Sylvan and Isabelle avenues around 11:25 a.m.
The homeowner came home and noticed a screen was removed from one of her windows.
She confronted the suspect when she got inside and the suspect ran away from the house, police said.
When the homeowner went after the suspect, neighbors heard the commotion and responded.
The neighbors were able to catch the suspect and handed him over to officers when they arrived.
Police have identified the suspect as 23-year-old Shakeel Chand of San Mateo.
Chand is also a suspect in a car theft after officers found a stolen car parked in front of the home.
Officers searched Chand’s home and found evidence linking him to a car theft, police said.
Chand was arrested on suspicion of burglary, possession of stolen vehicle and possession of stolen property.
He has been booked into the San Mateo County jail.
