PINOLE(KRON)—Three Pinole police officers an a civilian were sickened by toxic fumes late Monday night.
The officers responded to an emergency call at the Pinole Vista shopping center parking lot on Fitzgerald Drive when a man from El Sobrante was acting erratically and making incoherant statements around 8:40 p.m., police spokesman Sgt. Matt Avery said.
The man was the one who called police.
“He was making weird statements that there were bugs on his skin,” Avery said.
While police were trying to talk to the man, three of them were exposed to toxic fumes coming from his gray pickup truck parked close by.
Firefighters and police found the fumes were made out of a combination of household cleaners.
Crews closed off the parking lot while they were cleaning up the mess.
The man was taken to the hospital for medical treatment and a mental health evaluation.
The three officers said they had trouble breathing. They were taken to the hospital where they were treated and eventually released.
Officers say they don’t know why he had the mixture in his truck.
“We did not get any indication that he was out to harm us or anybody else,” Avery said.
The whole mess was cleaned up by 12:50 a.m.
