Central California man badly wounds wife, baby, kills self

TULARE, Calif. (AP) – A man who shot and critically wounded a woman and their 9-month-old daughter who was in her arms died after turning the gun on himself, ending a 12-hour standoff with officers at a Central California home, authorities said Thursday.

The 39-year-old woman and her baby were clinging to life at a local hospital, Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux said.

The gunman was a known gang member with a violent history, Boudreaux said.

Medical personnel have twice revived the baby, and the woman underwent a second surgery within hours of the shooting, Boudreaux said.

“They are fighting for their lives,” he said.

The man, 37-year-old Larry Zamora, and the woman were not married but were a couple, Boudreaux said.

The initial shooting happened about 2:30 a.m. during an argument between Zamora and the woman, and he opened fire as she held their baby in her arms.

Zamora then went to a home several miles away, where he barricaded himself inside, officials said.

Zamora fired from the home, hitting an officer on the helmet. The officer was treated and released from a hospital.

The standoff ended at about 2:30 p.m. after deputies sent a robot inside the house, and it showed them an image of Zamora lying dead in a pool of blood next to a high-powered rifle, Boudreaux said.

It’s not clear exactly when he shot himself.
