VIDEO: 34th-annual Leap Sand Castle Competition held at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) —¬†More than 4,000 sand castle builders crowded onto Ocean Beach in San Francisco on Saturday for the 34th-annual Leap Sand Castle Competition.

Each team was mentored by trade professionals to build giant sand sculptures.

They all spent weeks together with young students to prepare for the event which raises funds for Bay Area arts education programs.

“As you look down the beach, these are all architects, engineers, construction, technology companies, that come together with students to prepare for many weeks before coming to the beach,” Leap Arts Education director Jill Dineen said. “They work with them in the classroom, they make scale models, and give them a real arts experience, and they come out here and make them come to life.”

The teams were able to squeeze their sand castle construction in between the two storms that are hitting the Bay Area this weekend.
