KRON4’s Haaziq Madyun was on the scene and reported that an altercation between a True World Foods employee and a pedestrian took place in the back of the shop.
That altercation first broke out around 11:45 a.m. in the parking lot.
“The light colored truck pulled into the back of the True World Foods on Williams Street,” Lt. Robert McManus said. “There was some sort of an altercation, we are not sure if it was between the driver of the pick up truck and an employee of the business here.”
Police believe that a potential motive is that the suspect was stealing empty wooden pallets, something that is not uncommon for that area.
A review of surveillance video is in effect, according to police. They are trying to determine if the crime was caught on camera.
As of 5:13 p.m. sources tell KRON4 News that the suspect has been stopped in Oakland east of 12th and 47th Streets.
Oakland police spotted a suspect matching the description given who was driving an abandoned truck holding wooden pellets. The man was then seen walking away. They chased him and found him under parked car on 48th Ave. and arrested without incident.
“We offer our condolences to the family, friends and co-workers of the man who lost his life earlier today in this senseless act,” said Lt. Robert McManus. “Today’s arrest by the OPD officers exemplifies the commitment that law enforcement has in quickly bringing those who commit violent crimes to justice. I credit the Oakland Police Department for this fast arrest and thank them for the continued partnership that we have together.”
The suspect has been identified as a 27-year-old Kadeem Edwards of Richmond. He was arrested in Oakland at around 5 p.m.
Edwards will be interviewed by San Leandro detectives as they continue their investigation.
The suspect will be taken to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. He will be held on suspicion of murder without bail.
He is expected to appear in Alameda County Superior Court later this week.
