VIDEO: San Leandro homicide victim identified



SAN LEANDRO (KRON) — Takeshi Watanabe, 54-year-old of San Leandro, has been identified as the victim of Monday’s homicide in San Leandro.

Watanabe attempted to stop a man who was stealing wooden pallets from a True World Foods San Francisco warehouse at 1815 Williams St.

He got into an altercation with a man in the rear area of the warehouse. Watanabe was then struck by a car and killed at about 11:45 a.m.

Surveillance video in the area showed a truck which officers later spotted in Oakland on East 12th Street near 47th Avenue near a pallet recycling business at around 5 p.m.

The suspect, 27-year-old Kadeem Edwards of Richmond, allegedly fled from the vehicle on foot when officers tried to stop him, but was found hiding under a parked vehicle roughly a block away and taken into custody.

Edwards is being held without bail on suspicion of murder. He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

Watanabe was a father, husband and a True Foods employee for 23 years.
