(KRON/CNN) — Authorities said 174 inmates have escaped from a prison in Haiti after a riot in which a guard was killed, according to CNN.

The prison break happened at a facility in Arcahaie on Saturday, National Police Spokesman Inspector Garry Derosiers said.

A dozen inmates have since been captured, according to Derosiers.

It is not clear how the prisoners broke free.

SWAT teams and defense forces are currently searching for the inmates.

Residents have been urged to be cautious and to shelter-in-place.

The US Embassy is warning Americans to avoid the area.
