PETALUMA (KRON) — A 69-year-old driver from Vallejo died Thursday night on California Highway 116 after being involved in a collision with a tree, according to police.
Petaluma police officers and firefighters were dispatched around 10:47 p.m. after hearing a Toyota Camry drove off the south side of Highway 116.
Police said the accident happened a half mile East of Pineview Way.
Upon arrival officers and firefighters discovered the male driver who was unresponsive and not breathing. Crews extricated the man from the vehicle and administered CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after.
The Petaluma police department are leading the investigation. Officers are unsure if alcohol played a factor in the collision.
A prior investigation suggested that the driver may have had a medical emergency which caused him to drive off the roadway and collided with a tree off the shoulder of the roadway.
The Sonoma County Coroner’s Office have not released the identity of the driver due to notification of the family.
The investigation is still ongoing.
